Equipment that offers 100 percent efficiency is a great deal, right? For every unit of fuel used, you get the same amount of heating or cooling, with no waste. What if you had heating and cooling equipment that delivered 400 percent or more efficiency? You’d get back four to five times more heating or cooling than you paid out in energy costs. That’s what you can expect from a geothermal heating system installed in your home in the St. Charles County area.
Amazing Efficiency
Geothermal heating and cooling equipment pull temperatures from the earth to heat and cool your home. In winter, if the constant underground temperature is 50 degrees and the outside air temperature is 20, your heating equipment only has to raise the temperature an additional 20 degrees to give you a comfortable 70 degree indoor temperature. Compare that to equipment that is trying to keep you warm by raising the temperature of 20 degree air to 70. A 20-degree rise in temperature requires far less energy than a 50-degree rise. That’s the difference between geothermal heating and conventional heating.
How Geothermal Heating Works
Standard heat pumps pull cold air from your home and replace it with heat from the air outside. A geothermal system operates the same way. The difference is the constant below-ground temperature instead of the widely fluctuating outside air temperatures. When a geothermal system is installed, long loops of pipe are placed underground. These are filled with a fluid that absorbs the ground temperature. That fluid is moved to your heat pump, and then the heat is extracted and moved into your home. In summer, the same process occurs to cool your home. The fluid leaves the heat pump and then travels back into the ground to begin the process again. Different types of piping are used depending on the land area available. Geothermal heating and cooling can also be extracted from a pond or lake.
