Five Tips To Try If Dust Is Ruining Your Home’s Indoor Air Quality

Indoor air quality is important for any homeowner because it affects your health and how you feel inside your home each and every day. While attacking the source is the most efficient way to improve your air, not all sources can be eliminated. Here are five tips you can try if you need to boost your indoor air quality.

Upgrade your furnace filter
The efficiency of a filter is measured by its MERV (minimum efficiency reporting value). Upgrading to a higher MERV will help you capture more particles as they float through your air system. Electrostatic filters are more expensive but are highly effective.

Keep closet floors clear
Though it may sound overly simple, your closets are actually prime sources for all sorts of dust. They collect and fall off your clothes, sheets and towels, and accumulate quickly. While this is unavoidable, if you remember to vacuum your closet floor regularly, you will be attacking a major source of air pollution.

Clean, don’t spread, dust
Rags and feather dusters help to pick up dust, but for the most part, they simply scatter it around. Damp rags or cloths that use an electrostatic charge to pick up dust are much more effective. Vacuum attachments can even spread dust because of their exhaust; only use them in places that are hard to dust otherwise.

Install an air purification system
Air purification systems often incorporate ultraviolet (UV) lights to rid your air of dangerous microorganisms such as fungi, bacteria and viruses. UV lamps get installed in your air system and expose these pollutants to their rays, which immediately alter their DNA, rendering them unable to reproduce.

Control humidity levels
Using a humidifier to control the amount of moisture in your air can have a huge influence on how your air feels. When it’s too dry, you are more likely to catch colds. When it’s too moist, everything feels clammy. Whole-house humidifiers give you control over the humidity in your home.
